Waunarlwydd v Maesteg Quins | 14th April 2018

Waunarlwydd played host to league leaders Maesteg Quins and were unlucky to come away without any points, against a team that has not lost a league game this season. After the recent cold weather, Saturday was warm and sunny, this led to an exciting open game of rugby.

Mistakes from both sides led to a try each, first was an interception for Maesteg wing going clear from deep inside his own half to score. Quins were then guilty of collapsing a driving line out gifting Waun a penalty try, Lee Evans kicking a penalty to put Waun ahead early. Quins then pressured Waun, a lovely miss pass from Quins outside half provided a walk in for the first of two trys for the Maesteg outside centre, Lee Evans again kicking well to make it a one point game.

Good turnover ball from a scrum which Waun sent wide to Gretchy, (hide and seek champion for the month of march for his ability to disappear on the pitch, but has been in good form in recent weeks) running hard drawing 2 men and managing to slip an impressive pass to Alan Pope who finished well from 30yds out. Quins then scored two more tries, outside half breaking the line from a scrum and with excellent support and two passes later Quins outside centre scored a second. The last score from Maesteg came from a driving line out putting the game out of reach. Waun had a spirited last 10 minutes but were unable to break down the Maesteg defence.

FT Waunarlwydd 20 - 28 Maesteg Quins

Maesteg were clinical with their chances which was the difference between the two sides. Waun forwards had alot of positives to take from the game, with prop Ryan Porter adding the Jackel to his improving skill set, latching on to the ball like a horny gibbon to win an important turnover which pleased the crowd. Flanker James Cleary also had a good game slowing Quins ball down in his typically aggressive style.
