Waunarlwydd v Nantyffyllon | 7th Oct 2017

Waunarlwydd through to the second round of the Welsh Plate after beating the up and coming Nantyffyllon in a difficult game.

First half both defenses came out on top keeping line breaks to a minimum, which meant both sides only managing to score points from the kicking tee. Waun second row Dan Moyle created an exciting play, looking to break from the half way line showing great link up by running a loop with Rhys Cherry to create the line break. Dans lovely handling skills but a foot like a toblerone resulted in his grubber to beat the full back going dead denying what would have been a very good try. Waun went into the break leading, Lee Evans kicking brilliantly with any penalty conceded by Nant in their own half, three of these kicks in the 45-50m range.

Half time Waunarlwydd 12 - 3 Nantyffyllon

There was a high penalty count which was met by bewildered looks from many players.  I've seen the same look before when the question "does a penguin taste like a bird or a fish?" has been raised to a room full of people, the result being the same in both instances....confusion. This lead to a frustrating, disjointed game for both players and supporters.

The first try finally came from a scrum in Nant 22, Waun number 8 Jacob Blackmore pick up and drive creating a good platform for Jamie Rose to make good yards, until Adam Mort took a short ball bursting over the try line from 5yds out. Nant then replyed, bravely opting not to kick penaltys with two quick taps and good pressure seeing them over the line for their own try, shortly after kicking two penaltys to close the gap to 19 - 16. Waunarlwydd then raised the tempo with the introduction of fresh legs in both front and back row. Good driving from Waun scrum in Nant 22 led to Adam Mort scoring again from close range. The best was saved until last with a good kick return from Alex Tregembo quickly followed by a break from Nick Jones to see Waun prop Andrew 'Cubby' Lloyd power over to score Wauns final try.

Waunarlwydd back row played very well with Bez, Cleary and Jacob but showing strength in depth to bring on excellent players Steff and Guy Jones, Andrew Lloyd and 'Phil The Bull' Evans to put away a physical side in Nantyffyllon. Man of the match must go to Waun outside half Nick Jones, who passed and controlled well often ghosting through gaps smaller than a dwarfs front door.
