Waunarlwydd v Seven Sisters | 4th Nov 2017

Waunarlwydd make it won 5 and lost 5 in all competitions this season, after winning at home to seven sisters side that are yet to record a win in the league this season.

Waunarlwydd started the game in an unfamiliar yellow kit which should've been a comfortable colour to many of the Waun team, as in their line of work as power engineers they wear high visibility jackets. Perhaps it was this that led to the unusually slow start, with many players falling into their mid week routine of one working six watching, which lead to the usually solid midfield defence resembling Swiss cheese, leeking holes for the Seven attack to make brakes. First try came from an 8 pick up at the scrum for Seven who passed to the scrum half to break, a good last ditch tackle set up a ruck, the ball was moved wide quickly for Seven to draw first blood. Waun replied with a penalty then a try, with Waun outside half Nick Jones who's hands are so soft he could make a fortune in the valeting business and would surely give an excellent job with no machine necessary, throwing a miss pass to put Scott Davies into a gap. Scott was stopped in the Seven 22 before several pick and goes resulted in a try for Adam Mort, who was on as an early replacement for the injured Jamie Moore (hamstring). Good handling and passing by all, led to another break for Scott Davies who drew and gave to Andrew Spowart with excellent quick hands released wing Alex Tregembo, passing back inside to Scott who had continued his run in support and finished the excellent move off, which was converted by Lee Evans.

Seven came out fighting with their outstanding centre partnership leading the charge, 13 K Davies going through the gap passing back inside to 12 B Atkins to finish a move that came from the back of a scrum 40m from the Waun try line. From the resulting kick off Waun were able to gather the ball and maintained possession well, good clearing work at the breakdown by Andrew Lloyd and a strong carry by Phil Evans gave Lee Evans a platform to break and put Rhys Cherry over for the try. Waun were then guilty of over playing in their own half putting pressure on themselves, Seven number 8 R Davies gathered the ball ran hard and aggressively to brake tackles to score under the sticks.

Seven bottom of the league were no whipping boys, although they have yet to win a game in the league with an outstanding centre partnership and a bit more confidence, are easily capable of beating teams. Special mention this week going to the evergreen Darryl moore, who in his early 40's is still extremely fit and strong putting many people half his age to shame. Bets are now being taken on his retirement date, but it would be a foolish man that bets on the end of this season.
